Edmonton Truck Gallery

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

I recently moved into Edmonton, and it seems that even here, in Alberta’s storied capital city, they have some uncommon approaches to decorating their vehicles.  This hearkens back to the couple of unique vehicles of Northern Ontario I showcased in a previous article.  The first truck shown in that 2007-era piece was only a shadow [...]

Vehicles Gaining Electrical Potential

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

I wrote previously about the idea of the electric car, citing such documentaries as ‘Who Killed the Electric Car’ (here),  and discussing the work of manufacturer Tesla Motors (here).  Here is some additional info on this interesting field that I learned recently.  After all, it would be nice to get away – at a reasonable price - from the [...]

Save on Gas by Filling the Tank Half Way

Sunday, December 2nd, 2007

The average rate of gas consumption of a particular make and model of car can be conveniently determined at this page.  Based on the information there, the type of Ford Focus I currently drive has a rating of 9.2 L/100 km (31 mpg) in the city, and 6.8 L/100 km (42 mpg) on the highway.
As mentioned in one of the tips at this [...]

Unique Vehicles

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

Here are a couple of interesting vehicles I’ve come across in the last while, posted for your viewing pleasure.  I’m not implying that this area has more custom auto jobs done than other places (we seem to have the usual proportion of tricked-out Honda Civics found anyplace else), but some of them are slightly more unusual:
First [...]

Pricey Parking Spot

Friday, August 31st, 2007

While the previous demise of Sudbury’s former eclectic restaurant ‘100 Georges’ to be replaced with an uninspiring parking lot did cause some consternation in the area (as first covered at this website here, and then in its lamentful sequels, 2, 3, and 4), it in no way approaches the profiteering from parking spaces in skyrocketed real estate [...]

The Trans-Siberian Highway

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

Recently, I wrote of the proposed underground tunnel whose intent is to connect Alaska with the eastern edge of Siberia (see map of locale here). Among the comments at the end of this article (read them here) were references to what would be likely the longest and most monotonous part of the now-driveable journey from [...]

Possible Road Trip Destinations to be Less Restrictive

Saturday, June 9th, 2007

A short while back, I read this article, which gave the interesting news that a collaborative plan was underway involving both Russia and the United States, to build a tunnel beneath the Bering Strait.  At a length of about 103 kilometers, this will be the longest tunnel in the world, linking the former Cold War enemies at Siberia and Alaska [...]

The Motor City Underground (ie. the Detroit Subway)

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

We all know Detroit, Michigan as the headquarters of the “Big Three” U.S. automakers.  This is also made fairly clear in other ways; one look at the ubiquity of expressways on a map of its downtown (see here) shows how fixated on the car the city’s planners were (though believe it or not, it apparently could have been [...]

Scripturally Untenable Vehicles (SUV’s)

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

The sport utility vehicle, the profitable darling of so many auto manufacturers, has for a long time received the brunt of a great deal of criticism.  Much of it is well-founded; to many, this car category represents the epitome of wasteful consumerism, a position that is difficult to disagree with when presented with obnoxiously large vehicles like GM’s Hummer.  So, [...]

Yielding to the Czechs and Germans

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

For many, it’s a pleasure to cruise down an open highway.  Most of us would have few qualms about driving faster than we usually do, were the speed limit higher and/or the police not so seemingly omnipresent.  Here in Ontario, it is never posted anywhere more than 100 km/h.
In Germany, home of the infamous Autobahns - as well as [...]
